The schedule tribe population in India is spread over various states. About 705 individual ethnic groups are notified as STs in India. Based on 2011 census, the population of scheduled tribe is 10.43 crore, about 8.6% of India’s population. To your surprise, only 10.03% lives in urban areas and remaining in rural areas. The gender ratio (sex ratio) in Schedule Tribes is good, 990 females per 1000 males compared to 940 females per 1000 males overall in India.
